HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the A.P. High Court comprising Chief Justice A.R. Dave and Justice R. Subhash Reddy indicated to the HUDA on Wednesday to take action with regard to the constructions and laying of roads in and around Durgam Cheruvu.

Though no formal written orders were passed, the bench asked HUDA’s standing counsel to look into the matter and take action. The bench was dealing with a writ petition filed by Forum for Sustainable Development (FSD) represented by its adviser J. Rama Rao.

Plea to court

The petitioners complained to the court that the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructural Corporation (APIIC) had taken up massive works in and around the lake although the rocks around Durgam Cheruvu were part of heritage precincts.

On an earlier occasion in 2001, a Division Bench had directed the authorities to stop the flow of domestic sewage into the lake and halt construction in the catchment area but no action was taken till this day. In fact, there was a ban on construction in the 30-metre buffer zone around full tank level as declared by HUDA in 2000.

The petitioners lamented that in spite of representations the authorities were laying a road in the water spread area, destroying rocks and cutting trees on the banks. The bench felt that HUDA should be given time to respond and adjourned the matter to July 1.

Telangana sentiment will not work in city: GHCC president D. Nagendar

HYDERABAD: With the announcement of bypolls, Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee (GHCC) is gearing up for forwarding the names of aspirants to the Pradesh Congress Committee president D.Srinivas and Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy for the three Assembly constituencies in the city.

With the candidature of P.Vishnuvardhan Reddy, son of Khairatabad MLA and senior Congress leader P. Janardhan Reddy, from Khairatabad constituency a foregone conclusion, it is Musheerabad and Secunderabad Assembly constituencies that would be engaging the attention of Congress leaders in the city.

Party programmes Though senior Congress leader Kodanda Reddy’s name has been doing the rounds for Musheerabad constituency, it is not yet clear whether Mr.Reddy himself is interested. The Congress, it is learnt, is also in favour of fielding BC candidates from both Secunderabad and Musheerabad or allotting one seat to a minority candidate.

GHCC president Danam Nagendar said the party would field serious and active candidates. The party believes that the Telangana sentiment would never be a factor in the city and that its candidates would have an edge over their rivals due to the policies and programmes like housing, pension, Rs.2 a kg rice, etc.

Moreover, people in Musheerabad and Secunderabad that were represented by TRS were sore for their ‘non-performance’ despite being in the Government as was becoming evident in the ongoing Praja Patham, Mr.Nagender said.

HYDERABAD: The three city constituencies going for bypolls next month will see triangular and even multi-cornered contests this time unlike the straight electoral combat between two parties during the 2004 elections.

It was a straight fight in Musheerabad, Secunderabad and Khairatabad constituencies in the last elections with Congress and TRS forging an allinace, while the Telugu Desam and BJP contested polls together in Musheerabad segment. Read the rest of this entry »
